Competency 6.4 and 6.5
“Word identification, vocabulary, and
spelling.” --teach students to refine spelling through reading and writing
using various patterns to aid in word identification.
Research says:
- Important to write and spell as they read
- Children learn to read before writing
- Children begin spelling by using the relationship
between letters and sounds
- Many children use drawings and single letters to convey
messages
- Children use invented spelling to write words. This is
normal and should be encouraged. It will usually fade with phonics awareness.
How To Do It:
- Support invented spellings
- Reassure parents that invented spelling is normal
- Support children to be aware of the sounds of spoken
words and the letters that correspond to them
- Use focused instruction and practice which encourages
the children to write formerly studied words correctly in finished products
- Show students how much of the misspelled word they
spelled right when correcting them
Extension
- This could be done in the classroom by allowing students
to use invented spelling. Teaching phonics awareness and having the children
correct their spelling is a good way to use it also.
- The practice of allowing children to use invented
spelling develops children’s understanding of sounds, how they are separated
in words, and knowledge of sound-spelling relationships.
